Default Confused about jailbreaking on my 3g, already searched. Please help.

I just spent the past few days searching and reading this (and other) forums, and I think this is a case of reading TOO much information and ended up confusing myself.

I have an 8gb iPhone 3g. Version 3.1.3 (7E18), Model MB702LL, Modem Firmware 05.12.01. That info comes from "About" in settings. When I run Fuzzyband it shows that I have 6.4 bootloader, OS version 3.1.3

That is it's current status. I am not sure what it was when I first got it, I bought it from a friend and did a complete wipe of the phone. I have jailbroken and unlocked a few older pre-3g Iphones with no problem....so I figured this would be just as easy. I guess I should have read BEFORE touching this phone as I am a Tmo user. Anyway...

I know that I can not unlock the phone as it stands now, based on my modem firmware, and can't downgrade it due to my bootloader. That much I know. But from what I am reading, should I have even been able to jailbreak it?

I mean, obviously I jailbroke it already....only to then find out I can't unlock it. But I keep reading things about not being able to jailbreak 3.1.3. Or am I getting confused because when the phone was "updated" to 3.1.3, THAT is when the bootloader was updated, thus stopping me from unlocking it?

I guess I am just asking, should I have been able to jailbreak this phone? At this point It's just an ipod touch for me, until the devs push out a way to unlock either the modem, or downgrade the bootloader. I'm just confused because the more I read the more I think I shouldn't have been able to jailbreak it.

Well, you can jailbreak a 3G on 3.1.3 no problem but as you stated, you can not unlock it now because of the modem firmware being 5.12.01.

ya to jailbreak it u have to downgrade to 3.1.2 and then use blackra1n.
using itunes do a shift restore to this firmware Apple, iPhone & iPad Forums, Mods, Guides, News, Themes, Downloads, and more! | ModMyi.com - Downloads - iPhone 3G 3.1.2

when its done ull get errors like 1015 and 1012 ignore those.

then when it says the error go to blackweather
and download blackra1n and run it

That's what I keep reading, that I need to downgrade to 3.1.2, but I didn't do that. My OS showed 3.1.3 before and after jailbreaking. It's still jailbroken now, but I am on 3.1.3. That's what is confusing me.

I know I can't downgrade the bootloader, but would forcing an older OS on the phone downgrade the modem firmware?

Ummmmm redsn0w, point to the 3.1.2 firmware and jailbreak, is what I have read will work for a jailbreak without all the brain damage. Am I wrong here?

no, it will still be 5.12.01

You know what, that makes sense. Now that I think about it, after creating my "custom" firmware, the "how to" told me to point to a 3.1.2 file to flash, then continue with the jailbreak. I forgot about that, especially when the phone still shows 3.1.3 even after jailbreak.

Well at this point I am already jailbroken. Now I'm just waiting for someone to release a way to unlock it so I can use it on Tmo.

I love my G1, but I would like to be able to go back and forth between the two phones.

Your not using a custom firmware with redsn0w, no need for it anyway he can't preserve the baseband. But redsn0w doesn't recognized 3.1.3 so you have to use 3.1.2 for the jailbreak.

I can't help it, I'm addicted to Android. I know there is a whole Android vs Iphone thing out there...personally, I find that Android is much more "real world" functional....especially with full HTML internet. But the iphone seems to have a lot more toys. So I figured instead of taking sides, I will have the best of both worlds. My G1, AND an iphone. But until someone comes up with a way to unlock 5.12/6.4....I just have a G1 and an ipod touch that MIGHT be a phone someday.

Once a unlock comes out and you get a chance to actually use the 3G like it is intended, you will cross over the the "Dark Side", I'm sure. Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

My 3g came stock upgraded with the new baseband and firmware. I just used the redsn0w 0.9.4 jailbreak with 3.1.2 firmware. Worked like a charm. The guide on this forum will help you trough the process, it is what I used. Unlocking on the other hand as we all know is still left to be delt with.
