Confused! Have APN settings, but only VPN option on phone?!

I have just bought an unlocked iPhone 3G, as I want to use it with my PAYG Vodafone sim. The guy who sold it to me emailed the settings that I have to change, and told me to do the following:

Settings> General> Network> Cellular Data Network

and then type in some info.

I can get as far as

Settings> General> Network... but then the only options are Enable 3G, Data Roaming, VPN, or Wi-Fi

And because I know nothing about technology, I now have no idea what to do! Any ideas?

I didnt do any of it. The phone detected the edge network automatically & i could browse without doing any access point configuration
