I had the iphone jailbroke for a very long time. I don't have to tether it. I'm 3.1.2 05.11.07 I recently unlocked it so I can give to my bro-in-law. I don't have a tmobile sim. Any way I can tell if the unlock worked?
There really is no definate way to find out if the phone is unlocked or not until you put a SIM card in the phone. The best thing I can tell you for that firmware and baseband of the phone is to run blackra1n and download cydia and install blacksn0w. It should be unlocked and jailbroken at that point (if you already have it jailbroken then just make sure you download blacksn0w), however you can't really confirm that until the T-Mobile SIM card is placed inside the phone. When placing the SIM card in the phone make sure the 3G is turned off, to find that go to Settings->General->Network->Enable 3G (OFF). Good Luck!
thank you for all the information. I used blackra1n to jailbreak a long time ago. Then a few days ago I used blacksn0w to unlock. I put in an old (not activated) tmobile SIM and didn't know about turning 3G off. The phone says "Searching..." the whole time. Did I screw it up by not turning of 3G before inserting the SIM? (and why the hell doesn't blackra1n tell me to do it or better yet it turn off 3G).
is there any trick with emergency dialing to see if the SIM was accepted?
You didn't mess anything up, if the phone was powered on and you put the SIM card in and the 3G was also on then it would be stuck in searching, what I would do is power the phone off and then on, turn the 3G off, then place the SIM card in the phone. The T-Mobile SIM card you have might be to old and won't read in the phone. More than likely the phone is unlocked if you did blackra1n and blacksn0w, just make sure when using a T-Mobile SIM card that the 3G is turned off before inserting it into the phone.
Don't think you really need to power on and off. I've turned it on and off plenty of times and when I turn it off it always finds my sim.
Why would blackrain tell you to tell off 3g. That makes no sense whatsoever. If you jailbreak with blackrain and still use AT&T you wouldn't turn 3g off. Totally unrelated.
Sorry if I seem harsh. Just constantly amazed at some of the comments I read bichin about blackrain and such. How about this instead: "hey geohot, thanks for taking the time to make blackrain so I jailbreak my phone. What , and it's free?! No way!! "
