IPhone with T-Mobile

I got this Iphone from my friend. He had it thru T-Mobile prepaid and now its locked and it won't let me do anything. It has a SIM card of TMobile still in the phone. I need to unlock it and should i leave the SIM card in it while unlocking it? Sorry i am new at this phone so i really don't know about it. Thank you with all your help!!!

you need to find out what firmware is on there and on what baseband you on and a bit more specific in your questions toooo...since iphones are alot outthere

Don't see why it would just stop working... Unless you upgraded it or restored it. You still have hope to unlock of you're not on 3.1.3 bb 5.12.1.

You should check. You can bypass being locked out of the phone by asking your friend what firmware he had the phone on before and using the right program to jailbreak it. Get your info then let us know.
