Teens with iphones

I gave a relative my old 2G with then fresh 3.0 working superb. I got a call later that nite with disgust asking me where does the sim card go on the iphone? Yes, the story gets worse. I go by with my laptop to run redsnow and all of a sudden the touch doesnt work mind you the phone was out of my possession for less than 24 hours. They took it the next week for a repair becuase a magnet was stuck thru the headphone hole. The phone was repaired but on unlocked 2.2.1 fw and my relative was mad because of lack of landscape texting and this took place almost a year ago. Now, I was not told about the magnet or that the damage was already done before I showed up to try to restore/unlock the phone again. The other day I was called and the phone is showing the apple and the circle and doing that over and over. Do you guys think my relative selected the restore iphone in the settings menu? OR do you think it was dropped in water?

put it in dfu mode and restore it again

Update-I bought the phone back and all it needed was a fresh restore/unlock. Its now running 3.1.2 unlocked and jailbroken.
