Unlock/Jailbreak 2nd hand iphone

Hi,

i recently bought a second hand iphone from a friend of mine and i would like some help on how to unluck and later jailbreak it. i did some research on the internet but cant figure it out myself because of several reasons.

The Iphone is an Iphone 3G, firmware unknown.
It originaly came with a t-mobile contract sim thats still in the phone but not working anymore.

The only thing that i get when i start the iphone is the itunes logo with the itunes cable and a slider for an emergency call.

That means its unactivated right? so i need to somehow activate my iphone and then jailbreak it so i can use my own sim-card.

another thing is that the home button doesnt work so i cant get my iphone in DFU mode :S

I heard about some jailbreak programs that can jailbreak without going into DFU? or can i go into DFU without home button

So im kinda stuck:P

Anyone any idea how to start?

so just to shorten the message:

Unacivated Iphone 3G, unknown Firmware
Unworking home button, so no DFU mode possible?
would love some help with unlocking and jailbreaking it

I will tell you that I have plugged into itunes and when prompted to update I did a alt/restore on my mac and just selected the custom firmware to update too. I did not put in DFU mode and it went straight thru with no error and I was updated to 3.0, 3.0.1, and 3.1.2 all these times.

Itunes doesnt recognise my iphone though, it gives an error when i plug my iphone in. my guess is that t-mobile blocked the sim or something. so i would like to unlock it and then jailbreak it. anyone can help me with that ?

^Remove your sim and put your iphone into dfu mode-Hold both home and power for 10 seconds and release the power while continue to hold the home buttton until itunes recognizes your iphone in recovery mode. You should have downloaded a custom firmware (check internet for that) and alt/restore and select the custom fw and restore to it if on MAC and PC hold shift/restore and select the custom firmware and restore to it. I would save the custom firmware to the desktop on either system to select it during this dfu process.

thanks again for your reply but as you can read in my opening post, my home button doesnt work, so i dont know if there is a possibility to but my phone in DFU mode.. + the iphone is sim-lock to a t-mobile sim card which isnt mine. so i need to unlock it and would like to jailbreak it afterwards. i dont know how to start though since i dont have a working home button, is there any unlocking/jailbreak program that works without DFU mode?

sory i realy appriciate your help but your asnwers got me totaly lost now.. it seems like either you didnt get my question right or i dont understand your answers...

am i right that you say i have to turn of my phone, remove my sim-card, then plug it into in itunes (put the phone back on i assume?) and then restore with custom software?

so that will activate my unactivated iphone and makes that i can use it with an other simcard? and its jailbreaked then aswell?

turn your phone off and by plugging it in to itune it will turn on automatically and may recognize so you can restore the custom firmware. the custom firmware will hacktivate ur iphone so your sim will work. After is going thru the update/unlock process it will end with the home page at that point you will insert your sim.
