Iphone 3gs unlock, sim issue

I just recently jailbroke and unlocked my iphone 3gs, and i tried to put in my sim card from my samsung s366 (regular crappy flip phone) and it says no service. when i go to carrier under settings it will say, 'Your selected cellular network is restricted. You can choose a different network in settings'. Just wondering, can i just go to any carrier (Telus, Rogers, Bell, Wind) and buy a sim card and a plan not under contract and make it work? i'm probably looking for a data plan as well. I'm located in Canada if that would make a difference. I'm hoping I'm not boned and i will be able to use this iphone sooon.

Well if you're not getting a message 'Invalid Sim' when you pop-in your other sim then surely you can try with sim from some other carrier.

Did you install ultrasn0w or blacksn0w? I just switched from my AT&T sim while traveling in the US to my Rogers card and couldn't get service. I had to reinstall ultrasn0w. But yes, if another carrier will sell you a pay as you go, it should work too.

yes i installed ultrasn0w through blackrain. i bought this new in the package off some dude is there a chance it is stolen? should i go into rogers or telus and ask them for a pay as you go sim card? i dont wanna pay for a sim card that won't work and i also wouldn't mind getting the package with a data plan. i'm not gettin the 'invalid sim' message. just the restricted message

It could very well be a baseband issue (modem firmware). What version are you?

I'm using firmware 3.1.2 and modem firmware 05.11.07. i checked the serial number and the imei number and came to the conclusion that the phone is not stolen or any of that good stuff.

I wouldn't worry about it being stolen. You need to use blacksn0w with 05.11.07, not ultrasn0w. That should fix your problem.

uhm, i'm using sn0w, it's just called sn0w in the blackra1n app i got on my iphone. the blackweather repo isn't there, would you happen to know the source?

yeah i downloaded the 'blacksn0w' app from cydia and i didn't get a new icon, should i respring? i went into the blackra1n app and used 'sn0w' there, presumably blacksn0w.

You won't get a new icon. I don't use blacksn0w as my baseband still supports ultrasn0w. Have you installed blacksn0w through Cydia?

Yes.. I went to the blackra1n website and downloaded the latest version for mac, i jailbroke the iphone, and then installed cydia. i then proceeded to hit the button marked 'sn0w' and it installed said 'thank you for using blacksn0w by geohot' i then hit the close button and the device went back to the hold screen.
maybe it is the sim card i'm using, i took an old sim card from a phone my roommate is using it's currently on a plan for rogers, just a voice plan. my5 i think. the phone is originally a rogers phone and it had a rogers sim card in it i just swapped them.

You need to reboot the iPhone for blacks0w to kick in. Maybe try adding the http://blackra1n.com repo in Cydia and using Cydia to install blacksn0w. Any GSM SIM card should work.

okay, i've rebooted but i have to reset my network settings because my wifi stops working for some reason eveytime, so it's like 2 reboots. i'm gonna try one more time and then i might just wipe the iphone and start fresh, i've used the sn0w button in blackra1n like 15 times. i'm, gonna reinstall from cydia and try again... i'll get it one of these times.

is it maybe because when i reboot i have to run the blackrain on my mac to get the ipod out of recovery mode? does it wipe the settings...?

I don't follow... What iPod? You shouldn't have to run blackrain on your Mac again. Those fixes are for some of the issues of blackrain. It's not as complete as say, using PwnageTool.

sorry, my bad iphone., what i mean is, everytime i turn off my iphone it has the connect to itunes symbol, so i click 'make it rain' and it boots the iphone. because if i dont i cannot access the phone at all

Ok. I've never used blackrain. Maybe skip blackrain and jailbreak through PwnageTool, and just use blacksn0w to unlock.
