new user uk, iphone bought in usa unlocked for usa

Hi, Brand new user so a little lost. Bought iphone in usa unlocked for usa advised that as going to use in uk would require a gevey sim (which i bought)to run phone on 3g in uk. My first query is will this work (i am on a t-mobile uk contract) my second question is simple, when i insert the gevey sim should the iphone be off or on or is this irrelevant, would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Depends on what firmware you are on. If you are on 2.x then Gevey will work (I don't know why you would use it though since there is a software unlock which is much more reliable).

Secondly, if you're on 3.x firmware with baseband 4.xx and up, Gevey will not work. What you need to do is jailbreak the phone with Blackra1n (if you are on 3.1.2) or Redsn0w (if you are on 3.0.1) and install Blacksn0w (unlock for 3.1.2 baseband 5.11.07) or Ultrasn0w (unlock for 3.0.1 baseband 4.26.xx).

If you're confused after all that, I suggest you post what your firmware and baseband are so that we may futher assist you with more detailed instructions.
