confused and new to this.PLEASE HELP

so i have a 16gig 3g iphone, and i want to update it to 3.1.2.
do i have to do it through itunes?
if i update it will i have to re unlock it?
if so, what would i have to use? blacksn0w? UltaSn0w?
all these things are confusing me with bb 5.x.x and 4.x.x
im currently not on 3.1.2 and my bb is 4.x.x
can anyone help me out on how to update it to 3.1.2 and if i have to reunloock it. And with what programs? thanks boys

Upgrade using iTunes then go to blackweather
and download it. Then open it and pree s make it rain
