    Default New to unlocking iphones

I have some basic questions I cannot seem to find answers for. I just purchased a 3g 8gb phone. I currently have Tmobile so when i got home with the phone i proceeded to read up on JB/unlocking the phone.

first question: i have is in order to unlock/JB do i need to have a AT&T sim card? I have my Tmo sim but didnt know if the software would do what it needs to do without a sim.

second question: how do i figure out what is my software version and all i need to know while software to use to jb/unlock the phone. I cannot get through any menu on the phone to figure out what version i have since if i put the tmo sim card in it says invalid.

    thanks for the info

    Welcome to MMi,
I suggest you update to 3.1.2 firmware in iTunes. Then use Blackra1n to jailbreak and Blacksn0w to unlock.

Leave the T-Mo sim in, you'll be fine.

No, turn 3G off, it will not work with T-Mo.
Just restore in iTunes to return to stock configuration if needed.

Hold both power and home buttons together.
Hard reset is when you go through the settings/general menu.

    1. Press the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously for more than 12-15 seconds, ignore the “Slide to power off” and keep holding.

    2. The iPhone would go blank after few seconds and would automatically shut down.
    3. Wait for ~10 to 15 seconds and then turn the iPhone back on by hitting the sleep/wake button.
    4. You should now see the Apple logo, your iPhone is restarting and thus booting up.
    5. Your iPhone will now reboot. Hard Reset process is complete.
