The term is Jailbreaking. and you can do it with blackra1n found @ blackweather

This all assumes you're on a 3g or later iphone with os 3.1.2 base band 05.11.07. if you don't know how to check this, reply and i'll tell you how to do that to.

If you don't know how to make your iphone have such, then you can just use iTunes and use the "restore" feature under the "(usernames) iPhone" tab on the left side of the itunes menu.

very simple process. Download the windows version and run it while your iphone is attached. after it runs, there will be a blackra1n icon on your iphone SpringBoard (desktop). Choose that, make sure you have internet (either via your network or via a wifi connection) and choose the Cydia option, then click install. any other questions, just repost and I"ll see what I can do

The possibilities with a Jailbroken iPhone are practically limitless. Anything from setting themes and ringtones to playing gba, psx and other games via emulator, or you can let various programs run in the background. That one is especially cool. Imagine pandora playing while you check your email. If you google it I'm sure you'll find your own personal jailbroken wonder.
