    Default iPhone woes (unlock issues)

My iPhone was acting oddly (rebooting randomly, freezing etc) so I booted up itunes and it told me that there was an update (3.0 to 3.1.2). I did some googling and found that there was indeed an unlock for XP for 3.1.2, so I had itunes go ahead and update my phone.

I got it updated, and then jailbroken via blackra1n, but now the phone does not see my t-mobile carrier and I can't restore it via itunes as it now says the sim card is not supported (it worked fine before updating to 3.1.2)

I can't find my old AT&T sim card, so what do I need to do to fix this?

    Thanks!

I recommended that you find someone with a mac, and have them download the 3.1.2 firmware for the 3G, and pawntools, then generate a custom ISPW that is pre-activated. Then install restore your phone to that... Then you will have to unlock it through Cydia...

    Start “Cydia” on your iPhone.
    *

Touch on “Manage” tab on the bottom.
    *

    Now touch on “Sources”

    * Touch on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a url source. Type “http://blackra1n.com” and touch on “Add Source”.

Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

    * After installation is completed. Search for “blacksn0w” in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier.

Thank you! I didn't have to resort to using my roommate's mac, as once I read your post I googled custom firmware to see what it was all about, and found this which contained a link to a pre-generated firmware (and accompanying instructions) to use with unlocking the phone for other carriers.

Of course it reset all my settings and erased my music and contacts, but I anticipated that and had backed them up thankfully!

an easier way to go about all that after upgrading via iTunes to 3.1.2 is to just use blackra1n @ blackweather on your pc, download the windows version of the software, connect your iPhone, if iTunes starts up, close it. Then run the blackra1n software, it'll simultaneously jailbreak it and hacktivate it *activation without an AT&T sim card*

That allows you to freely use the iPhone.

then, via wifi, with the blackra1n app on your iPHone, install cydia and sn0w, let it run and reboot, and you're up and running on the 3g 3.1.2 with tmobile.

When applying a new update with plans to jailbreak it is always better to do a clean install of the firmware than to do a restore from backup. It saves you a lot of issues if you just do a clean install then jailbreak without doing a restore from backup.

Just be sure to sync all information before you do anything. Because a clean install will wipe all contacts off the phone and you will have to re-sync after it is all done.

yeah, that's what i was referring to. The "restore" feature in iTunes installs a freshly downloaded iPhone software version 3.1.2 with the new 05.11.07 baseband. I wasn't talking about a back up restoration, but a full restore through iTunes

Ok, the phone is unlocked and jailbroken and can call/send texts etc... except....

When I disconnect the phone from the computer, after a few minutes it shuts off completely, and will not turn back on. When I connect it to the computer again, it immediately shows that apple logo and starts to boot up.

It was doing this prior to my efforts to update it, but I thought perhaps it was a software issue. However, it's completely updated now and it still happens. It's almost acting as if the battery isn't staying charged, although it shows to be fully charged.

    Any ideas?

Certainly a pickle. I've never seen that before, but maybe try to do a hard reset (holding the lock and home buttons at the same time) while it's plugged in and then removing it during the apple logo screen?

    Trying this now.

I tried plugging it into the wall using my spare cord, and the same thing happened - it would boot up immediately after being plugged in.

    Update:
I unplugged it while booting up (from the wall socket and then the computer, both) and the screen immediately dimmed to almost nothing, it looked much like a TV screen with an image burned into it (that level of contrast). After about 30 seconds, it shut off completely. The battery showed full during this time.

wow. that seems like the device is having issues realizing it's charged. Even if it wasn't charged at all, it wouldn't boot up when plugged in, but instead show that it's charging and to wait till charged enough to boot up. I can't think of anything else. maybe just leave it charged overnight and see if there's a change in the morning?

I think it's something to do with the battery, I may have to disassemble the durn thing. =(

I'm confuzzled now, hehe. I disassembled the phone, couldn't find anything wrong with it, and put it back together.

    It works perfectly now.

I guess something was just jostled out of place or dusty or something!

Well sometimes a battery pull is all it needs. Congrats on the working phone. Enjoy! Lol
