Default 3G Broken/Unlocked using Pwnage--any benefit to updating Modem Firmware?

I have a broken/unlocked 3G phone on 3.1.2 and 04.26.08 modem firmware. Is there any benefit to updating the firmware and then breaking/unlocking again with Blackra1n/Snow?

I have been having a lot of dropped calls and calls that go directly to voicemail. The T-Mobile guy said that the modem firmware update would help that.

Also, the phone is very sluggish. Would rain/snow make it faster?

I don't want to do anything that would cause me to lose my unlock!

    Thanks for the help!

    DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!

BlackRa1n is much worse!! You will have random signal losses, and if you are using data and voice at the same time, it will loose signal to both and drop them both.

I have AT&T, and never had any problems with UltraSn0w, except I couldn't see the carrier. So like 2 days before they released .92, I did the Restore of 3.1.2, then I put my custom 3.1.2 on there, and installed BlackSn0w to my phone, and experienced the signal instability.. I uninstall it, and my signal is perfect. Install it again, and it is flaky again. So, until I leave the country and need the unlock, I run the phone locked to my AT&T card. Ohh how I wish I had my old Baseband, and UltraSn0w. Or that the Devteam would update Ultrasn0w for the new baseband, and fix the problem.

So all those people with new 3G's are having this happen? I haven't seen any mass posting about this. I would think Geohot would be getting slammed if this was happening everywhere.

I just bought a new 3G to give as a Christmas present and broke/unlocked with Rain/Snow. It hasn't been used yet obviously but I hope this isn't true!

He might be, but with all the people wining about a untethered jailbreak on the new boot rom, they are probably overshawing it.

There are no consistent problems with blackrain or blacksn0w. Most issues arise from people improperly upgrading their firmware.

Not true! I properly upgraded mine. Did the restore, with the 3.1.2 strait from apple, and ran it, and it is still not stable when tethering internet, and being on a call. Try it. Call someone, and go to speedtest.net, and test your speed. The call and the data session will drop, and your phone will say "Searching.." for a second or 2, then it will have service again. Remove BlackSn0w, and it works perfectly, then install it again with Cydia, and what do you know, It drops again.

It is not a signal issue, because I have full bars on my phone at home, and it does it there, and at work, there is a AT&T tower in my parking Lot, and it does the same thing there..

With UltraSn0w, it worked perfect. I wish I could go back to my old baseband, but it isn't possible. So I am running with no unlock. I just have to keep in mind that when I travel, I can't use voice and data at the same time on another company's SIM.

I am running a ROM made with Pawnage right now, with the 2 bit Commcenter hack to enable tethering. Enable Tethering on iPhone 3G 3GS 3.1.2 Firmware | Redmond Pie (I actually put it in the ROM I made, because on my mac, it mounts the rom as a drive while it waits for an administrator password, so I put it in then.) I also Edited the ATT_US.ipcc to change the typemask from 1 (Data Only) to 49 (Tethering and Data), and put in AT&T Carrier graphics to make the logo area have a logo instead of just AT&T text.

Also note, UltraSn0w worked perfectly with the commcenter hack, and I had the same problems on BlackSn0w without the commcenter hack, so I don't think that is the cause...

All that to say, Don't Assume I improperly installed the firmware like I am some sort of Noob. I guess most people don't use Data and voice at the same time. Also note, if you have mail setup, and someone emails you with an attachment, It will probably drop the call with BlackSn0w....

Don't get me wrong, I am not Bashing BlackSn0w, and I am grateful for it. I just wish the bugs in it would be fixed, and people act as if they arent there...

Just put BlackSn0w from Cydia, and called my phone. Ran the Speedtest app on my phone while in a call, and what do you know, the test was going good, and then all of a sudden Call Failed popped on my screen, with 0 bars showing on my screen. And I am 300 Yards from the tower.

I found this thread as I was obviously having the same problem. I have no removed blackra!n or sn0w yet because luckily I am on 3.1.2 on a 3gs and have an untethered jailbreak and I would hate to lose that, but I did a fresh 3.1.2 install from the iclarified downloads, then blackrain and cydia and rockapp. I can deal with a dropped call or two since I rarely actually talk on my phone anyway.
