3G Firmware mystery

Hi all,
I'm one of those people experiencing the "wrong firmware bundle" problem. Here is my situation:

I'm trying to unlock a 3G iphone. It was never unlocked before, and was running OS 2.2.

I understood that I needed to upgrade to OS 3 before jailbreaking and unlocking (the instructions for Pwnage and Redsn0w/Ultrasn0w all seemed to suggest this).

So I downloaded the ipsw for 3.01, baseband 04.26.08 from the iCommunity trusted site linked from the iphonedevteam's blog. This is the same version I'm running on my other phone, so I thought I would start with it.

I did a restore in iTunes using that ipsw. It worked fine - the phone is now wiped and showing 3.01, baseband 04.26.08.

But now when I try to run Redsn0w or the Pwnage tool (trying both 3.13 and 3.14), and pointing it to the same ipsw, I always get the "wrong firmware bundle selected" error message. It's driving me nuts!

I am sure I'm using the right ipsw for the phone's current OS and baseband, and I'm selecting the right phone in Pwnage.

Can anyone think of anything I'm doing wrong?

I think you need to download 3.0 firmware file and point redsnow to 3.0 when it asks for the firmware even though you are on 3.0.1 because 3.0.1 was a minor update for a security issue.

Correction - Kwine, I think you're on to something.

It didn't work the first time with Redsn0w, and didn't work with repeated attempts with Pwnage.
But I tried again on Redsn0w and now it is recognizing the 3.0 ipsw!
So thanks for that...

On to the next problem: I can't seem to enter DFU mode through Redsn0w. I've tried a dozen times, including rebooting the computer and phone in between attempts, but my phone is not rebooting after the whole holding down the power button/home button process.

Redsn0w is stuck waiting for the reboot, and I can't get any farther in the process.

Any hints out there?

connect ur iphone to itunes and restore. that will take u 3.1.2 thengo to blackra1n.com and then download it. that will jailbreak and unlock ur iphone

Thanks Battlecrushr, but I'm trying to avoid 3.12 and the latest baseband because of the battery-dying/re-running Blackra1n issue. It's not my phone and the owner wouldn't be able to handle that...do you have any other suggestion?

but u have a 3g. its not gonna be tethered. only 3gs and ipt3g is tethered.
and the latest baseband u can unlock with blacksn0w
and battery draininy. thats every 3.X.X firmiware

I agree. I have 3.1.2 with the new baseband and my battery is great. Load it up brotha!!!

Hmm - better battery life in 3.1.2 - that is an incentive to go there!

Just to wrap up this thread for anyone following in the future, my problem was solved when an ingenious friend suggested I needed to use an earlier version of Pwnage to go with my earlier OS.
In the end, Pwnage 3.0 and the ipsw for 3.0 worked for me.

Wll yeah i had Blackra1n already but thats for the JB, didnt know Blacksn0w was out for the unlock.

Wrong. Blackra1n is for jailbreaking. Blacksn0w is for unlocking.
