I recently received an original iphone 8gb from a friend. She did a master reset on it and then gave it to me. I am currently on a family plan on AT&T and my family has unlimited messaging but no data plan. Can I use my current sim card to unlock/jailbreak this phone? Also, how can I determine what firmware my iphone is running? Should I just go straight through Itunes and AT&T or will I be better off trying to elude the activation fee?

Thanks for any help in advance. I'm guessing I'll still have to add the $30 data and messaging even though my family already pays $30/month for unlimited messaging??? This is just a 2g phone I think its ridiculous not to be able to add the family data add-on for only $10/month.
