    Default Restoring Iphone 3gs

    Hi Guys
I have an unlocked jailbrocken (using redsnow to unlock) iphone
3GS showing 3.0 on the general settings scteen even though I thought I was on 3.1.
The problem is i an always getting the sad iphone lockscreen and i am always in safe mode (what ever that is ?)
is it better to upgrade to software version 3.1.2 or just to restore using itunes
I tried a itunes restore and it said it wanted to upgrade the software and i am worried it will relock and brick my iphone.
Could someone please advise me of the best way forward, thanks in advance mickymully

You should check your bootrom. If it's the newer one then you shouldn't upgrade and find some other solution for your problem. If you have the older one then you're safe to upgrade to 3.1.2. The reason being you might risk getting a tethered jailbreak which can be annoying for some (needing to run blackra1n every time your phone reboots)

There really isn't a simple way to see your bootrom. You can google it... Something about going into recovery mode and running some program I dunno I don't mess with that stuff. If you still wanna upgrade you can upgrade straight up from iTunes to 3.1.2 then use blackra1n to jailbreak.

    Lots of misinformation here....
Bootrom issues are only for the newest (week 40+) 3GS's out and all of those came preloaded with 3.1.2 firmware.
You CAN NOT upgrade your bootrom via a firmware upgrade.

If your phone came with 3.0 or is older than a few weeks, you don't have any issues. Restore in iTunes and upgrade to the latest firmware. If you don't have a tethered jailbreak now, you won't have a tethered jailbreak after upgrading.

I don't see the "misinformation". I never said anything about upgrading the bootrom I said upgrading to 3.1.2 which is obviously the firmware. Why would anyone upgrade the bootrom if anything they'd want to downgrade... Which we all know is not possible with a 3GS. I was simply informing him that the newer 3GS will cause a tethered jailbreak and has nothing to do with the firmware or jailbreak method. Please read the posts properly before you claim there is "misinformation".

    This statement is incorrect...
It has nothing to do with being "safe" to upgrade to 3.1.2.
If your phone came with pre 3.1.2 then you don't have the new bootrom.

It's the same thing. You just worded it differently. And the meaning behind "safe" in thus context is safe to upgrade and know you won't have a tethered jailbreak. But I won't argue with you. No point in tryna convince someone who nitpicks words and feels the need to be right.
