advice please for unlocking/jailbreaking 3G from 3.0 to 3.1

Hi all, hope you can advise me please

I have a jailbroken, unlocked 3G, currently on 3.0 firmware with 4.26.08 baseband. I only have access to Windows XP.

My question is, can I jailbreak to firmware 3.1 (not 3.1.2) using custom firmware with iTunes 8.2 on Windows XP... and then, will I be able to unlock (for an unauthorized carrier) using ultrasn0w, successfully?

I have seen a lot of different problems, especially with Windows users, and I don't want to risk turning my iPhone into an iPod Touch!

Update to 3.1.2

Run Blackra1n. You'll be jailbroken and unlocked in 20 seconds....basically. (Well run Blacksn0w after Blackra1n to unlock).
