Step 1: Upgrade to stock Apple 3.1.2 firmware
Step 2: Run Blackra1n on computer
Step 3: Install Cydia and/or Rock on iPhone
Step 4: Search for and install Bootneuter on Cydia
    Step 5: Run Bootneutor
Step 6: Enjoy unlocked iPhone 2G!

This did not work for me. I'm on a Mac 2G on 3.1.2 Jailbroke with Blackrain, installed Cydia, installed Bootneuter. Ran bootneuter, set to 4.6, neuter on, unlock on did the flash. Put in my SIM from my working 3GS and the phone now says "a different sim is installed please connect to iTunes" I connect to iTunes and it wants me to activate. Shouldn't the bootneuter have HACKTIVATED the phone? I just need to test the cell service on this phone.
Any help is appreciated, sorry for the thread hi-jack

you cant use bootneuter with 3gs. add blackra1n.com as a cydia source and install blacksn0w from geohot. that should unlock all 3g and 3gs phones with current baseband

this worked for me 11/13/09 iphone 2g 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra1n. after bootneuter i had to install afc2add from cydia so i could ssh into iphone, and diskaid trial for my computer to access the root menu through usb. next i went root>private>var>root>library and made a copy of the lockdown folder to my desktop(just for safety reasons). next i removed the lockdown folder from device(some web sites keeped saying to replace it with another which you could download but that wasnt working for me so i just had to remove the lockdown folder from device and closed disk aid). rebooted iphone and it work with my t-mobile sim. hope it helps
