Do a clean restore to 3.1.2 firmare (connect iPhone to iTunes, click restore.
Download blackra1n: blackweather
With iPhone still plugged into computer open blackra1n and click "make it rain"
Let phone go through the jailbreaking process. Once it is done, connect to wifi and then open the blackra1n. Install blacksn0w, let it reboot.
You are now unlocked.

I just used blackra1n (I wanted to update to the latest baseband, for no real reason) and it was stupid easy with Rock handling my JB stuff and blacksn0w handling the unlock.

The only hiccup you may run into is if the iPhone you purchased has the uploaded iBoot (has a 41 in the serial number). The jailbreak is still possible, but it will be tethered. This essentially means that you must run blackra1n everytime your phone reboots.

Somewhat similar problem
I read that if I did not use Pwnage to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to ver 3.1,2. , I will not be able to unlock my iPhone - I did not use Pwnage. I then used the UltrasnOw to unlock the phone.
I can't tell whether I succeeded because I have not tried using another carrier's sim card.
After trying to instal ultrasnOw, I get the following pop up sometimes when Cydia was loading:
Error: Refreshing Data
GPR Error:
repo666.ultrasnOw.com [4]
Release: The following signatures
were invalid: NODATA 1 NODATA 2
Failed to fetch
repo666.ultrasnOw.com [4]
ages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2
returned an error code (2)
Some index files failed to download,
they have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.
Hope someone could help me on the above. Thanks !!!

ultrasn0w is NOT for the 5.11.07 baseband. You need to use Blacksn0w.

Don't want to hijack this post, but it is related...
I have 3GS, 3.1.3 and 5.11.07; used the latest blackra1n w/blacksnow and it indicated that it was successful.
HOWEVER, if I look at Setting>General>Network, I have Enable 3G toggle, Data Roaming, Internet Tetherinbg, VPN, and Wifi...
no Access Data Network options.
I am not having any issues (that I have been able to detect so far), but it doesn't appear to me that it is truly unlocked.
I've seen a lot of posts saying people don't have that option, but not how to get it.
Any input appreciated.

UltrasnOw works
Ref: I used ultrasnOw (not blacksOw)- I was worried because Idid not use Pawnage to upgrade to 3.1.2 before the JB with Blackra1n.
Like to report that I inserted another carrier's sim card - my Phone 3GS worked!
So my concern with the crashes and screenshots with the alerts in blue fonts during Cydia reloads, were not related.
After reading the experiences of others who got their crashes fixed, I think it's got to be innumerable repositories that can be in the system. The suggested fix is deleting them via iFile. I will try out later.
Thanks.
