Blackra1n and Blacksn0w Guide ?

Hi Guys

I am planning to go out and buy a 3gs so i was looking for a guide to making it unlocked. or is it as simple as.

1. Updating to 3.1.2 with itunes (which will update baseband)

2. Running Blackra1n

3. Running Blacksn0w from Cydia

and what are the problems that are happening at the moment ?

I have read that there seems to be wifi problems and to get round this you need to run rock app (what is this)

You guys have helped me from day's of my first 2g phone and now with my 3g and i was hoping for you help in the next step my new 3GS.

Can one of you guy's answer each point (in idiot proof as i am a bit thick lol)

i have never run any of the rain programs !! i have had a quick look at the RC3 for windows and it just brings up a small box that says let it rain ?

So do i click that and then it will give options on the phone it's self (told you it had to be idiot proff lol)

Just dont want to mess up and i NEED my new 3GS to be unlocked as i travel a loy and use severel sim cards.

and do i not need rock (still dont know what it is or where to get it)

Yes to ur ques about blackra1n, just hit let it rain then when it's done and ur phone reboots you should see a blackra1n icon on ur iPhone which when you click on gives you the option to install cydia, icy, rock and blacksn0w…then your all set!
For wifi problems that some are experiencing (not all so I just guess it depends how lucky u are! ) apparently there is push fix in cydia which you can install and it seems to make everything fine again, first just ra1n & sn0w it and then see if you wifi, YouTube, etc.

just to add...

Rock is simply another installer (cydia, icy and rock all give you access to the same files) which i find much faster then cydia.. and nicer looking.. lol

Also when you say you're looking to go out and get one, if you mean new from apple.. you might run into problems (tethering or w/e) where you need to connect to your PC/Mac anytime you reboot the phone or you lose your jailbreak/unlock.. I dont know first hand but it appears to only happen to newer iphones..

If you use Orange in the UK you might be best to wait until the 10th november when orange shops will be selling the iPhone on PAYG (same price as O2) then jailbrake/ulock etc.

Hey sorry guys I am a little bit confused. I read over this topic and I want to clarify my understand.

It doesn't matter which iPhone I have: 2g, 3g, 3gs, the steps to hactivate/unlock/jailbreak are the following:
1) Update to latest firmware OS 3.1.2 using iTunes
2) Use blackra1n to jailbreak & hacktivate
3) blackra1n will automatically install Cydia. I should use cydia to install blacksn0w, which I am guess will unlock the phone and the baseband????????

Few more questions:
1) Whats this wifi problem I hear that everyone has? Will I have the same problem? How do I fix it if I get the same problem after unlocking/jailbreaking/hacktivating?

2) How I carry out the jailbreaking/unlocking process without losing data on the iPhone?

1) its sporadic from the looks of it.. i had no issue, there is a simple work-around for it.. cant recall the name tho.. go go google.. lol

2) backup your phone with iTunes (its probably doing it everytime you connect it).. Best bet is to backup your phone, then upgrade the FW and set up as a new phone.. then you jb/ul using above methods, then you can restore your backup in itunes..

I followed the steps and upgraded the iPhone to 3.1.2 using iTunes, and then ran blackra1n, but it is not JB the iphone, I am stuck with one of the most expensive Paper weight.

Any suggestions to JB and Unlock...

Restore in itunes and then run blackra1n again.

NOTICE: If your Cydia icon does not appear after installing it using the Blackra1n icon on your iPhone....REBOOT your machine and it SHOULD be there. I had selected Cydia and when my phone resprung...Cydia was not there...but after a REBOOT...it was there.

Right...

I went out and bought the 3GS and activated it in itunes (with a proper O2 card) i ran blackra1n and installed Rock,Cydia, Sn0w all was fine and wifi was working...........

Then after a hard reset the wifi had vanished ??? so after two three goes of turning on and off i got the wifi back..... so i tried the push fix and when it restarted again the wifi had vanished.. so a couple more re-starts i got it back......

Does anyone know of another fix rather than re-booting when it goes away ???

Do we know if this is being looked by the devolopers and will they be bringing out a update with a fix ....

And do we know if it is a jailbreak problem or an unlock problem.

Once again thanks for the advice....

I hope they fix this soon as it's annoying.
