unlocking a iphone

I bought an IPhone from a buddy and it doesnt do anything when i turn it on .. All there is on the screen is the apple icon and when i plug a usb into it , it wants me to access itunes .. How do I get into the phone so I can use it ???? how do I unlock it ?

So does blacksn0w require the latest iTunes updates? I have 3.1 and 05.11.07 and don't want to screw up and update to 3.1.2 if it keeps me from unlocking.
