I have been unable to successfully unlock an Iphone 2g I got for my sisters birthday several times now. I am incredibly confused about what I am doing at this point. I am trying to get it unlocked so she can use it on T-mobile.
It originally had 3.1.2, I unlocked with Blackra1n, Cydia and downloaded ultrasn0w. This did not work something about it not being the right sim card. Not sure why this didn't work if you can tell me that would be great, I would love to understand.
Second try restore to 3.1.2 FW from Itunes. Then restore with custom 3.1.2 FW from Screaminkit's (sorry if I got your name wrong) incredible guide. Now I am getting "No Service" when inserting sim card.
Her birthday is tomorrow and would love to be able to give her a working Iphone as opposed to an Itouch.
So my next plan unless someone tells me otherwise is Redsn0w to 3.0.1, I don't even know if this works as it is already at 3.1.2 but I am out of ideas and can't find a solution to this. I read somewhere to turn everything off in BossPrefs and restart turn off then on in airplane mode, this didn't do anything.
1. You don't us ultrasn0w for 2G.
2. You don't need a custom fw for 2G. You can simply upgrade thru iTunes just fine since the baseband won't upgrade.
3. Try yellowsn0w instead.
4. If that fails downgrade to 3.0.1 thru iTunes and jailbreak with redsn0w which auto unlocks the 2G.
That is what I ended up doing. Downgraded to 3.0.1 with Redsn0w to jailbreak and unlock then updated with a custom firmware to 3.1.2, it is now unlocked able to connect to T-mobile and make call. I am not however able to connect to wifi?
Are you saying now that I am on 3.0.1 I can upgrade to 3.1.2 with Itunes? And do not need to use ultrasn0w your response confused me more then I already was.
Upgrading through Itunes? So I started all over based on the above information due to the fact that I was unable to connect to a wireless network.
This happened upgrading FW from 3.0 to 3.1.2. I did this buy using a custom firmware downloaded from fsmdotcom. The firmware version was 1_1,3.1.2 the unlock seemed to have stuck with the phone as it still worked on T-mobile.
Based the response the posting got #2 was "You don't need a custom firmware, just upgrade through itunes baseband doesn't change it will still work." I did this and you sir althought I appreciate you trying to help were wrong. So now I have a 2g iphone that is on 3.1.2 is requiring a Att sim to activate (something I do not have) and I cannot overwrite with RedSn0w because the 3.0.1 firmware will not overwrite the 3.1.2 firmware.
Anyone have any advice to help get me out of this mess I got myself into?
Should I do blackra1n now and use ultrasn0w to unlock? I got a "Sim not supported" error the lastime I tried that.

You're on a 2G if you upgrade it doesn't upgrade the baseband. And I am a girl not a sir. 2nd off you're on 3.1.2 jailbreak with blackra1n. Use yellowsn0w to unlock. It's not hard. You should also be able to downgrade back to 3.0.1 through iTunes 8.2 by hitting shift+restore. You're not specifying what happens during certain processes it's hard to determine what can or can't work.
Anniex423 is right ---slow down and take your time it will happen-- restore back to 3.01 and do the custom restore with the 3.12-- it works-- we all have been there--the wifi problem has to be something else-- check to see if your putting in the right password for the wifi--how are you trying to get on the wifi
you can get the 3.0.1 firmware here at this site-- put the phone into dfu while in itunes--itunes will say that your phone is in restore mode --hit ok then hit shift+ restore and itunes will look for the firmware that you got from here--put that in a place that you can direct itunes to- it will restore to 3.0.1- then do the same thing but use the custom firmware that you already have- the 3.1.2--should be good then--does take some time but it does work

Wrong password on the wifi? That's a funny one especially since it was an open hot spot. I have no idea why it wasn't connecting but after finding someone with a ATT sim card I was able to get it activated, then start over again and do what I originally did.
Not being able to connect to the wifi had to of been an error when installing the custom firmware because the second time I tried it worked fine.
Before I started the process I read several guides all of which pointed to ultrasn0w for unlocking after a blackra1n jailbreak.(Yes, even on a 2g) I never once saw yellowsn0w suggested in anything I have read.
I still do not understand why you insist on being able to *upgrade* with Itunes because it is 2g, even if it does not update the baseband it still did not work for me, the only way the unlock stayed was when I would use a custom restore. Thanks for the help anyway ma'am it was greatly appreciated.
Glad to see that ya got it to work -someone else here might need your help getting their phone unlocked so keep looking here every so often- we are all in this together- trying to help each other out-- what works for some doesn't always work for others so every idea should be welcome not ridiculed.
