Default Please point me in the correct direction

Glad I found this place lots of good info. Can you kind folks point me to a iphone unlock/jailbreak tutorial for dummies? I have a used 16g 3g arriving this week. I'm not sure of the firmware version but I'm guessing my friend did the last update?

I'd like to get all the files I need and research done so that as soon as it arrives I can get rolling.

phone is a 16gig 3g white. He replaced it with a 3GS so he's donated the old one to my gadget collection. It was originally on Rogers network in canada never modded or hacked. All he'd done is removed the sim card and put back in the box before shipping to me? anyway I can sync it with my Mac but keep all the APP he paid for?

    thanks in advance

Follow this link for jailbreak and unlock for dummies, lmao.
You will be able to sync the Phone with iTunes, but once you restore or re-jailbreak everything that the previous owner had on it will be lost and you will have to re-install what you want.

    Perfect! great link thanks
I was going to buy an Ipod touch for but a free iphone sounded good to me. I don't really need the phone and my normal carrier is cdma I thought it would still be nice if i could use it with a pay as you go in emergencies. I mostly going to use it for the remote app(itunes/appletv) and skype. But I'm not usually one to leave any gadgets running stock. Might be an illness?

quick question? this phone was on rogers I may want to put it on Fido or the new bell system in canada. what do I select at this point?

The General settings allows you to decide the partition size.
Check Activate the phone if you are not with an official carrier then click the blue arrow button.NOTE*: Deselect Activate if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier.
NOTE*: You may need to increase the size of the root partition slightly. My first attempt failed at creating the IPSW until I increased the size to about 695 MB.
