1. HK iPhone really carrier free? 2. How to recognize a legit unlocked iPhone ?
Note: I posted this on the General iPhone chat sub-forum, and after 60+ views nobody cared enough to submit a reply. So, I brought my questions back to my favorite forum where people are far more responsive.
1.
Does Hong Kong Apple iPhone (link below) work with ANY GSM carrier around the world or just "any carrier" within China?! It's a bit ambiguous to me.
iPhone - Apple Store (HongKong)
HK Apple statement:
iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and connect to
iTunes 8.2 to complete activation.2 Purchase limitations may apply.
2.
Have a friend in Dubai who has informed me that he can buy an officially unlocked iPhone 3GS (whether it's from Apple store or some 3rd party I am not sure). But my question is how can I (or rather have my friend) know whether the phone is illegally unlocked or it is legally / officially a carrier free iphone from Apple?

YEs, you can officially unlock the iphone. You have to use itunes to unlock it officially with ANY SIM CARD. If you tell the person at the istore, he will unlock it for you by using itunes in the store itself too. A friend of mine got it unlocked *OFFICIALLY* at the the store itself. And it is carrier free iphone, that is why it is expensive than in the U.S and U.k if you can see.
