unlocking 3GS Iphone

Hi Guys

I recently purchased 3GS Iphone from US. I would like to use the same in India. Could you please help me out with the procedure. Also can you please confirm if the procedure is same as that of unlocking 3G iphone.

Well if your phone out of the box has a modem firmware of 5.11.7 (Settings --> General--> About), you're out of luck! There's no unlock, and there seem to be no current development on an unlock for that modem firmware aka baseband. I'd get rid of it if I were you. I am in the same exact situation as yours (except that I'm not in India

).

If your modem firmware is 4.26.08 then you can jailbreak it with a custom firmware that does not update your baseband and then unlock it using Cydia.

Thanks for your reply...sorry but am pretty naive in this topic...Is there any way to change/downgrade the modem firmware, cuz I just checked my modem firmware and its 5.11.7, to my dismay....help....

Oh, and to further compound your ailments shrikant, your 3Gs might not even be completely jailbreakable. Well, it'll be tethered, meaning you can only turn it on while connected to a computer.

I have a 3GS iphone with modem firmware is 4.26.08 running 3.0 (7A341). I have been reading a lot about blackra1n and other issues regarding jailbreaking and unlocking it. Can someone tell me or point me in the direction to get it upgraded to 3.1 or higher so that I can keep my 4.26.08 firmware and do this all on a pc? (I know there are methods out there that people can only do it on a mac)

Do not use blackrain! You have to update your firmware to use it and it will lock your phone. There is a thread here that explains how to do it using a custom firmware created by a MAC user.

can you point me to this thread or a search term.

I thought I could just use blackra1n to get the job done, but I guess it will be put me in a state where I won't be able to unlock (as of now).

@chaggi - to use blackra1n you first have to upgrade to an official 3.1.2 firmware, which will upgrade your baseband, which will render your phone un-unlockable.

To avoid this, use PwnageTool 3.1.4, or don't upgrade.
