Possibillity of an unlock for 5.11.7BB looking dimmer day by day
Considering that every couple of weeks or so I read, especially on MMi, that a new carrier in some part of the world is going to offer the the iphone within the next few months, I see no point for the devteam or a similar group to work on an unlock. There's simply no point for them. It seems like for people like us, who are stuck with an iphone touch(!), getting rid of the phone is the best solution ( as opposed to the alternative of waiting for an unlock that may never come). Considering you can buy the internationally unlocked phone for about 690 if you shop around the world, selling your locked one seems to be strongly contributing to that idea. Your thoughts?

I bought it that way. iPhone 3GS out of the box (3.1, 5.11.7).
BTW: I just saw two additional duplicates of this thread created by me. I am not sure how that's happened. But I apologize, and request for the forum management to delete the other two! Thanks.

Dude, you don't have to worry, once there is an iphone which is official unlockable for the same version which you have mentioned, then you need to pay for your unlock too and you can get it unlocked. So in any case, your instrument would not go waste.

Where and how? I have been trying to get some info on this!
Here's the official iPhone 3GS unlocked (I believe to be 3.1)
iPhone - Apple Store (HongKong)
I will gladly pay the difference to get this thing going (considering I have no outstanding contract with any career as I paid $600 for the darn phone!) THANK YOU!

why not just buy an officially unlocked iPhone? You can pick up used 3G from Australia,Hong Kong.Italy,Greece,Russia and a whole slew of others.
I just ordered an officially unlocked 8gb 3g from Australia for $350 plus shipping. It's used and has scratches but it's nothing a new housing won't fix.

OMG! I think you misunderstood my post. I said, once apple starts selling independent (carrier free) phones, then the iphone which is presently locked for you would be unlockable at a price tag. So in any case, your instrument would not go waste.
Last I knew, all the 3g phones are unlockable.Last edited by ravelsnip; 10-26-2009 at 01:02 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

That I did! Apple is selling carrier free phones (to the best of my knowledge -- i.e. HK), but not in the US. Given the current trend, or at least at this juncture, I see a very dim possibility of your speculation materializing. Anyway, we can perpetuate beating a dead horse here, but it still doesn't change the fact nothing much could be done at this point. Personally, I have a few options: 1. to wait for an illegal unlock that may take months to be delivered. 2. to wait for a legal unlock that may never come. 3. sell the locked phone and buy a carrier unrestricted / free phone ( as I have mentioned in my previous posts, I neither have the time nor the patience to be part of this cat n' mouse game with apple. I will fork out the dough to have an officially unlocked phone so that every time apple rolls out a new update, I don't have to rush to here to see what's going to become of my phone should I decide to update.)
In the end, I was trying to figure out, what options other members of this community who are on the same boat as I are considering.
But, your initial post did get me briefly excited! lol!

aasd...
I am in the "same boat" as you. I'm seriously considering selling my non-unlockable iPhone/iPod touch and just getting one that is either universal or on a lower baseband. I appreciate the Dev Team and all they do but I can't wait much longer.
