Default About to unlock a 3g but..........

So, I finally just picked up a 3g iphone running 3.0.1. I want to jailbreak and unlock it for use on Tmobile. I've unlocked a few 2g before but never a 3g. I know I need to use RedSnow. My question is which firmware file should I download?

The phone is currently erasing all the other persons data and I havent touched it since it started erasing. Havent plugged it into the PC either. Just asking before I start the process.

Use redsn0w, but you will need the 3.0 .ipsw firmware ((when asked by redsn0w)), then ultrasn0w to do the unlock.

Should I have my itunes opened while I am installing and running RedSnow? Or should I keep it closed?

you can use the 3.0.1 firmware with redsn0w and it will be recognized, the 3.0.1 firmware maintains the baseband at 04.26.08 which is unlockable by ultrasn0w. Sounds like you are on a windows machine,so you have to use redsn0w but another option would be to download the custom firmware file for the 3.1.2 update that the pwnage tool made because it fixes a lot of bugs. download that file here edit, link removed. Not totally true, redsn0w will not recognize 3.0.1, so you will have to use the 3.0 firmware. Since there are no major differences in all the 3.0 And to keep it easy I would just suggest you stay on 3.0 for now.
As far as keeping iTunes open it will not matter.

your right, your phone can have 3.0.1 installed but redsn0w has to have the 3.0 firmware to recognize the jailbreak. good catch

Crap, Cydia wont open. I followed the directions to the T and it installed Cydia but I cant get it to open. I used 3.0 firmware. My iphone is showing its on 3.0.1 firmware. Any suggestions? I set up my Wi Fi password and that works. I havent put a SIM card in it yet though.

try running redsn0w again making sure you only choose to install Cydia only.
You can out your sim card in during the entire process also.
