Pwnage + 3GS + 3.1.2 = stuck in revoery w/ 1604 error
Hey all,
I belatedly attempted to jailbreak my 3GS (see a few posts below "Sadly confused w/ 2 phones to jailbreak/unlock").
The caution & confusion was apparently warranted, as now my 3GS is stuck in recovery mode and giving 1604 errors when I try to restore the custom Pwnage 3.1.2 firmware. Belive I'm using "recovery" right-- USB cable + iTunes logo whenever powered on.
Searched around for a while and it seems that most posts on the topic advise reverting to versions of iTunes 7.7. Other things I have tried:
- removing files from /Users/[username]/Library/iTunes/Device Support/
- restarting and trying to restore again
- trying another USB port
- trying another port + cable
- trying another port + cable + mac
- trying to get it from recovery mode to DFU mode and seeing if that helps (have been unable to get out of recovery)
- tried building another pwned ipsw on the 2nd mac, no luck
So... anything else to try from this point? Very much willing to experiment with things short of trying the stock 3.1.2 IPSW (if that'd even work...) while the old 2G backup is serving it's backup purpose.
[edit]
I also should mention that I didn't see the update note about killing the iTunes Helper app "...when PwnageTool asks you if your 3GS is already jailbroken/pwned". That may have complicated matters...

If you don't care about the unlock just restore your phone and use blackra1n much more simple. The Dev team solution is complicated for nothing. Blackra1n only takes one click.

Have u solve this issue yet? Has the device been previously pwned? If so then there's no need to put the phone into recovery or dfu. You can simply hold shift (option on a mac) and select your custom ipsw to restore. Two things you can try that worked for me... try holding the home button and power button together doing a reset in attempt to get it out of recovery or whatever, if that works then just go with the restore. If that fails, I also had a similar problem with my 3GS, try unplugging the device and turning it off, give it atleast 5 secs after it has been fully powered off and hold the home button while plugging the device in, that puts the phone in recovery and I was able to restore my 3GS on a custom ipsw again.
I hope that helps.White 3GS 16GB 3.1.2 Unlocked Currently using

@M4tt - it's not that I don't care about an unlock-- would be nice to keep that path open-- it's just that it's not critical in that I'm not currently replying on that for service. Basically if I can find a way to preserve that option, I'd do that. If not, I'll begrudgingly cut that option off.
@08lexus250 - this phone, the 3GS, hasn't yet been pwned. It's still in recovery mode. I'm going to try this evening things like the key combo you mentioned and the renaming of the custom ipsw files -> putting them where iTunes would expect them named as the stock files and see if a straight restore off of that works. Getting it into recovery mode isn't the problem-- that's where it's stuck at now. As of now, withit in recovery, trying the option-restore + loading pwnage-issue Custome_Restore.ipsw of 3.1.2 doesn't take (and yields the 1604 error and log entered listed above).
Will be giving it another shot tonight to try a few more things. If nothing by this weekend, I guess I'll have to try the stock firmware restore (if that'd even work...) + blackrain.
Thanks... and if anyone has any other ideas to try they'd be than welcome

Hey Bro I had this same issue with my 3gs, If you dont care about unlocking download the apple (3.0 if you do) 3.1.2 firmware which I am sure you did then get the phone in DFU mode and restore the apple (not custom) 3.1.2 firmware then once the phone comes back up create another custom firmware with pwnage and the important step is to let pwnage put the phone in recovery mode for you, you have to get it to do that and you should be fine to restore the phone with the custom firmware.
let me know if this worked for you.Last edited by matthias345; 10-23-2009 at 08:19 AM.

@matthias345 - thanks for that-- tried everything I could last night to get it out of recovery and into anything else (DFU, yellow triangle of warning, anything) to no avail.
Tried a few different ways to get the custom IPSW on there, also without success. The stock one was able to connect (looked like a call was made to apple that the custom one didn't attempt). Also tried starting the custom one to "shock" it into another state and then yank the cable-- no difference.
Ended up uploading the 3.1.2 stock FW.
Haven't gone any further with it, as my SIM is currently in my old 2G phone and not going to be back at my main computer with the backups on iTunes.
So I guess the next step is to try the Pwnage + 3.1.2 custom again just for the jailbreak, forget about the unlock for the time being, and this time remember to kill iTunesHelper while running Pwnage.
Thanks again all... and let me know if I've missed something.

Ok, so make sure that when you are creating the new/another custom firmware kill Itunes and Itunes helper before it asks you to put the phone in DFU mode from pwnage, then when you finally get there you will see that pwnage will upload a file to enable te 3GS to go into the dfu mode then upload the new custom firmware.
And also since your phone hasn't been pwned yet it is essential that pwnage puts your phone in dfu from within the program it self.Last edited by matthias345; 10-23-2009 at 09:55 AM.

I have the same issue. My 3Gs with 3.1.2 is stuck in recovery after trying to run Blackra1n to get Cydia on the phone. iTunes won't let me install a new custom IPSW either... Damn error 1604
