Default Friendly operator = unlocked iPhone 3GS :)

Not to rub it in, but the friendly rep of my service provider (3 in Sweden) agreed to unlock my brand new 3GS. Apparently the request will be send to Apple in the new few days and then iTunes should take care of the rest within 3-4 weeks, usually quicker.

All it took was 15 calls explaining that I travel to countries that are not part of the 3's data coverage (I don't) and plenty of sweet talk

I'll believe it when I see it of course, but it would be so nice not to have to worry about the operator lock given the challenges the Dev Team and Geohot are facing (I'm on BB 05.11.07 OTB).

Does anyone know what this unlock involves; e.g. will it require and un-jailbroken phone etc?

lol I'm afriad that would still be a distant dream. I'm sure the operator would come up with a response 3 to 4 days stating, "your request was subjected to approval and sadly it is the bad news" Ain't gonna happen mate.

And it's done... took a bit of time but in the end iTunes poped up that message. Have tested with another SIM and it works great

It used to. My previous non apple phones were all unlocked by ATT. I just had to find a friendly operator who would have understanding for my situation (I go to Europe a lot for longer times).

I didn't even have to find a friendly operator to talk to. If you have had service for at least a few months they will give you the unlock code. I never even say anythiny like I am going overseas or out of country. I just ask if they will give me the unlock code for the phone and there is no hastle. It is just you can't do this with the iPhone which makes me sad.

And that is exactly why I really hope Android takes off. As great as the iPhone is I want alternatives that are not bolted down whereever possible.
