Question about version 3.1

I have a 2G iPhone with fw3.0 on it now. Can i use redsn0w 0.8 to upgrade to fw3.1?

I don't believe redsn0w works with 3.1 yet. If you're not on a mac, best bet is to try to download a custom IPSW from the interwebs.

Oh, if you're on a mac, just download the newest Pwnage Tool (3.1.4) and jailbreak using the 3.1.2 IPSW from iTunes/Apple.

Sorry i should have mentioned im a windows user, and i've downloaded the restore file from the downloads section, is this what you meant by interwebs?

The restore file in the download section is a legit 3.1.2 (or whatever version you downloaded) IPSW straight from Apple. Upgrading via that will un-jailbreak your phone (on an iPhone 2G you don't have to worry about a software unlock solution becoming unavailable - for now and probably forever).

What you need to find is a 3.1.2 Jailbroken IPSW created with PwnageTool version 3.1.4 for the iPhone 2G. The Pirate Bay - The world's largest BitTorrent tracker should get you started.

I'd also recommend just staying with 3.0, since 3.1 doesn't offer that many improvements and you'll have to redo all your settings and things with Cydia.
