Default general question about unlocking, traveling, and changing sim cards

i travel a lot and like to buy sim cards in whatever country i am in

so obviously i have to unlock my iphone to be able to do this.

but i also want to jailbreak it

i was made to understand that a jailbreak gets linked to the installed sim card, and that if i change the sim card, then my phone would no longer be jailbroken. is this true?

then i was told that i could get buy an intermediate sim card (like a turbo sim card) that would then be linked to the jailbreak so that i could switch sim cards at will

but searching this forum seems to indicate that these sim cards are considered flaky and unreliable

what are my choices and alternatives and what should be my plan of action?

i've been to 3 different countries with my jb/unlock iphone and it worked the same as if i were in the US. Don't worry about it, all your features will be there as normal. Figuring out the APN's can be a ***** though if you need data.

I've never heard that a jailbreak is tied to a SIM card. I think you have incorrect info. Unlocking is not tied to a specific SIM either.

No! Not tied to sim card.

They used them for when you couldn't jb/unlock a firmware. When a new firmware comes out there's usually some lag between when it's released and when it it can be jb/unlocked. Also, in the early days you could only hardware unlock so a turbo sim was the way to go for those not wanting to open up their phones.

Because some time they would allow you to use different sim cards when a software unlock was not available.

    one more question:

i just used pwnage tool to jailbreak my phone. during the firmware creation process you must choose to either have pwnage activate for you (if you don't use AT&T) or activate through iTunes

since i used AT&T, i activated through iTunes

does this have ANYTHING to do with unlocking at all?

if i intend to use other sim cards when traveling do i need firmware that is preactivated by pwnage tool? or does the activation only apply to the initial setup?

more succinctly asked: now that i have successfully jailbroken with pwnage tool (3.1.2 firmware with 4.6 baseband iPhone 3GS) using AT&T service, can i freely switch sim cards from other companies and still get service from those companies?
