Help please. First timer stuck!

I have a 3g iPhone from Australia and I am now living in New Zealand. I tried to jailbreak it from the guide on this site and it didn't work. I think it was because I had updated itunes. I have now uninstalled it and reinstalled itunes 8.2. Before this I tried with software I bought from an online site which I now know was a con.
I really don't understand all the jargon I am reading in these posts and just want the phone to be usable.
When I try the redsn0w program the phones screen saye 'Downloading Jailbreak Data for ages and seems to get stuck there.

What do I need to do?

quickly unplug the USB and put it right back in when it gets stuck.

Thanks for that. When it is in now and iTunes is running, iTunes comes up with a message that the sim card is not compatable. What do I need to fix this?
