How do I activate a U.S. phone without an att sim?

How can I activate a new phone that is from the U.S. without a sim? Or Can I just Jailbreak it and Unlock? Will it work or do I have to activate it first?

You can jailbreak it and hacktivate it that way, you'll be fine.

but how do you know what firmware is the iPhone 3G without activated it? Without know what firmware on the iPhone, how to know which firmware to use to jailbreak?

I check the serial number and it was made before 3.1 came out. Way before!

You go into Settings/General/About and you can find the Version there as well as the Modem Firmware.
The Serial Number has nothing to do with it really.

sunga.. Just do a restore to a 3.1 pwned ipsw or restore to 3.0/3.0.1 and JB w/redsn0w

yeah well, I was responding to the post above me not realizing that it wasn't activated. I go through so many threads a day tuff to keep up with unless I re-read the entire thread which I obviously didn't. My Bad.
