using ebay sim to activate 3gs? plan to unlock for tmobile usa

I hear the only way to get push is through activating with an att sim card.

Someone suggested going on ebay and getting one for like 3 dollars.

But I heard that if you activate with another person's sim, then you end up getting all of their push notifications to your phone or vice versa to their phone. Is this true?

Does any att sim work??

this means I need to open an account with att to do this, right?

(doesn't that defeat the whole purpuse of unlocking?)
