OK, so I ran fuzzyband and its showing that my bootloader is 06.04 and my baseband is 04.26.08.
Does that mean I can upgrade my firmware and still be able to unlock?

I believe that you have the 3Gs, and updating that is a challenge iirc, due to the firmware signing by Apple. Look here for info on how to do that (I don't have one, so I don't really know how).

Use that to create a custom 3.1.2 IPSW file and then use iTunes to upgrade using the CUSTOM FILE you created (not the official one; if you do this you are ******).
That will preserve your baseband and still allow you to run the newest firmware version.
You'll need to re-unlock your phone using ultrasn0w though.
