Unlocking/Jailbreaking 3GS?

Hi guys. I just bought a 3GS. I've unlocked/jailbroken a 2G and 3G, and thought I'd find a handy guide in the "Guides" section, but I didn't see anything for 3GS. So I had a few questions before starting:

1. First of all, I thought unlocking and jailbreaking were the same thing, but there's two forums on each topic. What's the difference?

2. I see a lot of posts on programs that can do the job. I saw something called purplesnow, ultrasnow, redsnow. What is the best program to go about it? I remember when it was just yellowsnow, so now I'm really confused.

Unlocking = remove carrier block (any Carrier can then be used)
Jailbreaking = enable non Apple approved software to run on the iPhone

BTW - stay with FW 3.0 and leave 3.0.1 alone

so question as far as doing any type of updates or syncing how does that work? will it override the jail break? thanks.

What you mean is updating FW using iTunes I suppose - YES! u need to rejailbreak (and unlock)

Hello,

I have a similar question... I just upgraded my treo to an iPhone 3GS. Only problem is that I live 90% of the year outside of the States for business. Now that I'm in Africa, I realize that I cannot simply call ATT and have them unlock my phone so that I can use my African SIM cards.

From reading your earlier reply, I am to understand that I really only need to unlock my phone... Is this possible? I would assume that I have to 'jailbreak' my phone first, then unluck--but that sounds like a lot of work.

I just want to enable my device to work on the local sim card.

Please advise on the easiest method to accomplish this. Initially, I found a couple sites that I could pay and download a program, but it sounded too good to be true/easy.

Assistance would be great.

Why is that? I'm on 3.0.1 jailbroken with redsn0w and i'v got no problems at all!

As from the release of FW 3.1 - Apple has BLOCKED restore usage of FW 3.0 and 3.0.1. on 3GS.
3.1 Cannot be JB yet!

IF!! you are running FW 3.0 or 3.0.1 JB is easy...

You need a PC or MAC with internet to retrieve files requiered.

Do like this;
1 - Download FW 3.0 here: iPhone Firmwares download | iPhone Firmware
2 - Read & read the tutorials here: redsn0w. Once done read again.
3 - DO NOT restore (a 3GS) in iTunes
4 - Run redsn0w 0.8 downloaded from http://www.quickpwn.com/redsn0w
5 - select the downloaded FW 3.0 (Not 3.0.1 even if the phone is running 3.0.1) - continue

You should now be having a massive grin on your face.
