    Welcome to MMi,
    This will cure it.

DFU mode and then restore in iTunes.
    INSTRUCTIONS
    Step 1. Turn off iPhone
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it detects iPhone in restore/recovery mode.

    Alternative Method:
Step 1. Connect iPhone to USB then listen to the sound when it connects and disconnects.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.

You did not mention if you were on att or tmobile. You will need to unlock the phone or hacktivate it. You should follow^ after you have created a custom fw 3.0 or 3.0.1 ipsw file and make sure its on your desktop and select and restore with it.My 2 cents.

Run redsn0w or put an official (AT&T in US) SIM card in and connect to itunes
I always feel sorry for the guy in the iPhone commercials. He always gets a call right in the middle of trying to do something

^ ^^ yeah but he stated that he updated in iTunes and nothing about a jailbreak, but yes that would obviously work.

If he's in slide to emergency mode, then that means he needs to activate or hacktivate his phone.
I don't see how DFU restore will help
Or maybe I'm having one of my crazy moments again?
