HELP PLEASE: Using a 1st gen w/o sim card as a ipod

Thank you so much in advanced to anyone who can help me

My boyfriend gave me his old 1st gen iphone to use as an ipod but he has his sim card with him (in florida) and I'm in michigan...so when i plug it into itunes it says "NO sim card installed- insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iphone"....is there a way to activate it so I can sync it to my itunes without a sim card?

just use it as a phone...thats why its called iPhone if you dont want to, just sell it and buy yourself an iPod touch 2G or something..
