AT&T Sim required to unlock?

Do I need an at&t sim to unlock an iphone? I'm planning on buying a locked one and unlocking it myself for use on tmobile but will I be able to do that without having an at&t sim? Or do I have to borrow a friend's?

The phone will work fine, except for YouTube and push notifications. In order to get those two things working, you MUST legitimately activate the phone with an AT&T SIM. If you don't have one, they are seriously like $4 on eBay.

Hopefully you get it locked with 3.0 fw updated then redsnow to unlock it and enjoy within 5 minutes!
