Default iPhone 3g 3.0 no service but I see the carrier in the carriers list.

So today I decided to try and get my iPhone working again, as it hasn't since I upgraded to 3.0 from 2.2 with yellowsn0w. I restored to factory settings, redsn0w'd it, ultrasn0w'd it and then put in a prepaid Optus Mobile SIM Card, since my postpaid one was getting no service.

I got the same result, but I see carriers in the carrier list, and after selecting mine, it doesn't work.

But when I was typing this message, I got the following message on my iPhone:

I'm confused as. I've tried so many sim cards, and nothing works.

Same problem here on a friend's phone. Tried many restores and various jb/unlock methods to no avail.
