ultrasn0w is for the 3G phone. Will not work on 2G.
Easy fix is the good news. Since you gave no information about PC/Mac. Here is a tree type menu that will help you out. You will want to make sure you download all 3 files that you need besides redsn0w.
- BL 3.9
- BL 4.6
- 3.0.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

I thought with the 2g's you didn't have to worry about unlocking again. Once the device is jailbroken it's automatically unlocked?

^No, not all 2G jailbroken iPhones are unlocked.
There is an option to while jailbreaking though.
If you unlocked on a previous version then it'll stay unlocked through the upgrade, yes.I always feel sorry for the guy in the iPhone commercials. He always gets a call right in the middle of trying to do something

^ absolutely correct
OP stated it was not unlocked, hence the BL files.

Oh sorry. I thought the OP was saying that their go at unlocking wasn't working yet- not that the phone was never unlocked before. Apologies.
If all else fails you can jailbreak/unlock using the guide in the "Guides" section. Then continue with firmware update and jailbreak with 3.0FW on redsn0w. Should remain unlocked.
***This is only if blkcadi's fix does not work for you or if you can't find the BL files online anywhere. Just an alternative, but lengthier, method.

With the new 3.0 firmware, Apple has patched up the files that makes your phone unlocked. Hence, you have an option in Redsn0w to checkmark the "unlock".

^ yes agreed, but on a 2G you must add the BL files to do so.

please help my hair is graying by the second!
Saw that redsn0w would work as approved by dev-team so i went ahead and upped to 3.01
biggest mistake.
redsn0w unlocks my 2G to an emergency mode state where i cant reply to incomming text messages but i can dial out of emergency mode. (making an emergency call it says but i dialed a friends number)
i followed the directions on the latest on the homepage and no dice.

Did you activate prior to using Redsn0w?

Make sure you rename the downloaded restore file .ipsw instead of .zip before you unzip the file
