question about hacking a 2g iphone with a 3g sim card

I'm new to this so bare with me.

My friend got the new 3g iPhone and was willing to give me his old 2g iPhone. I have a 3g sim card in my current phone and I want to put my 3g sim card in the 2g iPhone. Will that work?

I also want to hack the iPhone so that I don't have to activate it through AT&T. Is that possible?

I downloaded Pwnage Tools 3.0 and iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw but it isn't syncing up.

(I am using a Mac but have an older PC laptop that I could use if someone knows a way to do it on the PC)

Yes it would work but you wouldn't have 3G signal
Both redsn0w and pwnagetool hacktivate (activate without going through itunes).
You can use redsn0w to do it on a pc only you won't have as many options.. it gets the job done though.

I used pwnage tools 3 on saturday and it worked great.

This morning (tuesday morning), I woke up and my phone now says No SIM detected. Did apple realize what happened and de-activate me? What should I do?

No. I don't think they can do that.
