ok so I have the old iphone the first one that came out. I bought it from a friend of mine who ugraded to the new iphone. It says I need to activate it with an ATT sim card and put in a credit phone number and all that crap. If I have a pre paid phone(pre paid ATT sim card) is there a way to by pass the activation and just use the sim card and iphone. The iphone is locked right now. It has a picture of the USB cord and says connect to itunes. Any suggestions?

Jailbreak it with redsn0w and unlock it with ultrasn0w. I'm not sure if ATT prepaid will work or not on the iPhone. If it does, great you don't need ultrasn0w. Jailbreaking with redsn0w will bypass the plug/itunes screen and bring you to your springboard. If you don't enter your CC info though I don't think your app store will work =P

You will need to put the phone in DFU mode first, then restore in iTunes to what ever OS you want, 3.0 is the newest.
