I recently bought a 2g iphone from ebay. It was powering on no problems and stating that there was no sim card.

I put my O2 sim in and it switched to the apple silver logo. Now the logo will not go away and I am unable to use ANY functions on the phone.

I have tried to hold the home key and power button for 6 secs/25secs,etc with no success.

Every time I switch fone on it has same problem. I even tried to reset on itunes site but it said that the iphone was not recognised.

Please help me as I'm very new to this

If you hold down home and power at the same time for 20 seconds or so it will force the phone into recovery mode. After this you can restore to 3.0 and rejailbreak. I promise it will work... if the phone turns on it will go into recovery.
