Which is better for 2g - Pwnage 3.0 or redsnow?

I've been doing some searching and located on iclarified.com two tutorials to upgrade the original 2g iPhone to 3.0 and unlock/jailbreak for MAC

Both use the same Boot loader files 3.9 and 4.6, but the instructions for Pwnage 3.0 seem a lot more involved (complicated) than the Redsn0w tutorial.

My 2G is presently at 2.1 and was jailbroken/unlocked with Quikpwn. Does anyone have a preference for either methods and why?

Also...
In previous posts on MMI, I had come across some discussions on backing up files using SSH and restoring those files to make the iPhone perform (1) faster and (2) allow you to keep Apps that you would have downloaded from Cydia and Installer (that typically an Apple upgrade would throw out) when you do an upgrade (eg 2.0 to 2.2)

ANy opinions on doing this before moving up to the 3.0 ?
