Default 2.2.1 to 2.2 Plus ensuing Problems

I am currently in possession of a iphone 3g that was sitting at 2.2.1 firmware. It was perfectly functional minus the phone being locked to Rogers. I tried to unlock it and the only way i knew how was to downgrade firmware to 2.2. I put it into DFU mode tried downgrading it, and unfortunately it didn't work.

I managed to restore the iphone with 2.2.1, via a shift click in itunes. Now i am left with the phone saying connect to itunes, with a slide for emergency at the bottom. I know im at the activation point for this phone, is there a way to activate this phone without having the original SIM? Or am i SOL and need to get the original provicers sim. Any help would be greatly Appreciated thanks.
