iPhone 3G Unlock Question

ive recently bought a 3G and wondered is it possible to unlock it without jailbreaking?

or would this work,
jailbreak it
unlock it
then restore it
and then would the unlock still be there?

Yes it can be unlocked by SIM adapter or by Jailbreaking and using yellowsnow depending on what Baseband and Bootloader you have.
Not sure why you wouldn't want to jailbreak, perhaps a turbo type sim would be your best bet then.
