UK iPhone temporarily unlocked

Can anyone suggest what will happen with regards to activation/unlocking of my replacement UK iPhone which was a replacement for an Australian iPhone?

I previously had Australian iPhone and returned to UK store due to faulty screen. I was given a replacement UK iPhone however I have since found out replacement iPhone serial number is linked to 1st iPhone.

The UK iPhone is currently working okay with O2 network however I am scared to register on itunes or upgrade firmware to 3.0 (when released) in case I get the dreaded "sim not supported" message.
