is unlocked or locked?? (very strange)

hi guys i just joined a few minutes ago but have been reading for a long time .
my question is:
i recently got an iphone 3g, and notice the 2.2.1 upgrade and of course the baseband update. But the seller states he never used itunes instead he used an "special way"
NOTE: it wasnt an scam,cuz i got it even knowing it was locked

now the real question

the iphone is not jailbroken, but just for the sake of trying i put my sim (tmobile) and instead of recv a message of wrong sim or not right provider.
i have "Puma" as provider an one point of signal (but when i try to call the call is hung up after 1 second)

what does this means i have try to google it a lot and no answers.

can i jailbroke and then try to yellowsnow or is this pointles?

Yeah, no good. 1 bar and immediate hang-up means nothing.

you can jailbreak it, but no unlock for you.
The Puma was probably done with MIM = make it mine.

and you wont be until the team figures out a new one

use turbo sim
