Never activated iphone unlock steps??

Okay so i unlocked my moms never activated 2g last time and i got the german steve jobs picture, i restored on 7.5 and then updated on 8.0 on a diff pc. Now im back to the original screen of an unactivated phone with no sim card inserted telling me to "insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iphone."
My question is do i have to activate the iphone first(i have a 3g myself that is on at&t) or do i just unlock with quickpwn. I just want to avoid that darn steve job picture again. Any help is appreciated!

Yeah man i was stuck on the steve jobs pic with his arms up and i think its maybe because it was unlockef right out of the box. Soneone please shed some light?

if its a 2G, cant you just upgrade to 2.2.1 and then jailbreak/unlock with quickpwn?

just let itunes recognize it. but rather then activate through itunes, open quickpwn and follow the instructions.
